Full Fat Band
June 22, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm£ 10
With support from Chris Small Trio and Al Hughes …
Touring Germany in May, Full Fat are an Alt Blues trio who have made a name for themselves performing throughout Scotland and the North East.
The band have gone from success to success, supporting big names like “Gerry McAvoy’s Band of Friends” and ex Gallows guitarist’s band “Ghost Riders in the Sky”. They were one of four semi-finalists in the Krakatoa 2017 “Eruption” battle of the bands out of more than one hundred bands who competed and in the same year they were nominated for three separate FUDGE awards, coming second in the “Best Album” and “Best Band” categories and winning “Best of The Rest” in both 2017 and 2018. Full Fat were also finalists for the “One to Watch Music Award” in the Original 106 Pride of Aberdeen awards in 2017. They have been featured prominently in local broadcasts including “Silver City Sessions” with D-Range Studio, the internationally streamed music show “Live at Captain Tom’s”, “Granite City TV” and had multiple appearances on SHMU Radio.
Further afield their music has featured on international DJ David “Kid” Jensen’s show “Jensen’s Dimensions” and have been featured in “Blues Matters” Magazine
The band is made up of three very different musicians whose influences range from Johnny Cash to Jaco Pastorius. This gives their music a distinctive groove and a recognisable sound.
Full Fat have a passion and a talent that will not be stopped and this is clear to anyone who sees them play. Their unique mix of smooth vocals, tight rhythm, sweet throbbing bass and mellow guitar tone lets any audience know what the band is all about.
The Blues is back ladies and gentlemen, and it’s Full Fat.
Formed in 2019 by Perth-born singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chris Small, the group are focused on performing music with honesty, integrity and passion.
Backing Small are Ivan Sveda on drums and Dave Shaw on bass. With over three decades of touring and performing experience combined, Sveda and Shaw provide the perfect foundation for Small’s new trio. Small is currently in the middle of recording his next record, due for release in Summer 2019. The first single, ’The Good Times’, is out now.
Rooted in the Blues and Soul tradition, like so many Scottish Singers, Al Hughes writes from his own perspective on topics which are very much of today. His influences can be clearly heard, but make no mistake, this music is modern, relevant and gathering praise from a growing number of well respected figures on the British music scene.
Comparisons have already been made – by more than one reviewer – to the acoustic playing of Rory Gallagher, and also to Chris Smither, Townes Van Zandt and Martin Simpson. His haunting, smoky voice is complimented by a variety of guitars, including a huge sounding, custom built, 12 string resonator, and conjures variety of moods, from forceful and raucus, to gentle and wistful, one reviewer calling his playing, “eerily atmospheric, while another referred to his voice as sounding as if it had been “aged in oak casks”. Al’s vocal abilities have led to a busy schedule as a session musician, and he now combines studio work with playing clubs, concerts, and festivals all over the UK and Europe.
Al’s album, ‘Sad Songs and Tall Stories’ was included in Blues in Britain Magazine’s pick of the year 2010, and his song ‘Count Your Blessings’ was among the nominees for best song at the British Blues Awards 2011. His follow up album, ‘Dancing in the Minefield’ built on this reputation as did his 3 cd set ‘Feel Like Robert Johnson,’ which was released in 2013.
Al’s music is regularly played on both local and national radio, as well as various digital platforms, and the two Lights Out By Nine Albums, for which he wrote many of the songs, made the top four in BB King’s Blues Chart on American Radio. The band also featured his song, ‘Laughing on the Other Side’ in a recent TV appearance. His last album, ‘Bottleneck Serenade’ was released in 2016, and a new album, together with a re-mastered ‘Best Of’ are scheduled for later in 2018/19.
